Go Go Gruner
So it seems the word is out. There's a white wine by the name of Gruner Veltliner that is absolutely delicious. If you are a Sauvy B regular looking for something new, look no further. Originating in Austria, and still the most planted grape variety there, this grape is an offspring of Traminer (think Gewurztraminer), which is also called Savagnin, a parent grape of Sauvignon Blanc. Pronounced "groo-ner velt-lee-ner", this delicious wine is made in two distinct styles. The first is light and crisp, expressing citrus notes of lemon, lime, and grapefruit, as well as nectarine and that thing called minerality. There may also be a sort of green (gruner) element, such as dill or celery or bell pepper, as well as white pepper. The other style is much richer and fuller-bodied, showcasing elements such as baked apple, pineapple, rich peaches and apricots. This style is made from the ripest fruit called "Smaragd" with luscious layers of honey, ginger, and roasted nuts. Wachau, Austria is a hotspot for this complex and age worthy Gruner, but also look out for Kamptal and Kremstal for a range of yummy wines. Gruner has traveled to neighboring cool-climate countries, such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, and northern Italy. It has also landed in New Zealand and the U.S., in places like the New York Finger Lakes and California's Santa Barbara Country. Come in to Vintage to try our current offering, Kirchpoint Gruner Veltliner Federspiel 2022. Though we don't have Wiener Schnitzel, a classic Austrian pairing, we do have a Chicken Piccata that would definitely fit the bill. Cheers!
